Accurate Language
Cannabis is not a drug
Use is not abuse
Cannabis is not 'Intoxicant'
'THC' is not Cannabis
Cannabis is not a drug
According to the South African Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act No. 140 of 1992, Cannabis (dagga), the whole plant or any portion thereof, except dronabinol
[(-)-transdelta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol] is currently classed as an Undesirable Dependence-Producing Substance.
" undesirable dependence-producing substance"
means any substance or any plant from which a substance can be manufactured included in Part III of Schedule 2.
" drug"
means any dependence-producing substance, any dangerous dependence- producing substance or any undesirable dependence-producing substance;
Read that description very carefully. In order for cannabis to be a 'DRUG', the Government must prove that Cannabis is
a) Undesirable – i.e. no positive qualities.
b) Dependence producing – i.e. the compounds of the Natural Cannabis plant must INDUCE or produce the dependence. Cannabis must be the cause of the dependence.
Psychological’ dependence, so-called, on any non-addictive substance, is the manifestation of an individual’s pre-existing psychological derangement. Cannabis therefore, does not produce dependence.
How can a plant that is non-toxic, non-addictive, can do no harm or maltreat the ingestor in any way, while simultaneously providing medically proven benefits be considered ‘undesirable’?
It is illogical to the point of absurdity to ban any harmless pleasant substance from the whole population because a few deranged individuals are compelled to its overuse.
Use is not abuse
The use of a substance is not of itself abuse; in the physical reality and by definition, to show abuse requires that the use of a substance maltreats the user in some way. Cannabis is not only safe, but is actually beneficial.
Its kind of like claiming someone is praying to much.
Prohibitionists have made it difficult for the non-specialist to appreciate that any 'recreational' substance exists which can be entirely without harmful effect, yet this is the definitive categorisation within which Cannabis correctly fits.
Cannabis is not 'Intoxicant'
It is not only technically incorrect but also thoroughly misleading to apply the word "intoxicant" to describe Cannabis. Intoxicant and toxicity, self-evidently, are not unrelated words. Toxic is derived from toxikon, Greek for arrow-poison. Toxicology is the Science of Poisons.
As there is no toxic amount for Cannabis, making it a non-poisonous substance. The mild and stress-relieving beneficial effects of Cannabis produce no interference in psychological attributes of character and personality. This is most unlike and should not be confused with toxic effects and results of alcohol use.
'THC' is not Cannabis
To equate the findings of research into a laboratory synthesized or isolated and concentrated compound such as cannabidiolic acid (CBD) or tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) with the entire plant's naturally occurring and numerous elements all combined, is erroneous, misleading and technically impertinent. Such findings and related ‘speculations’ are inadmissible. Tests conducted with high doses of 95% pure concentrates of the completely unnatural lab-THC, are only admissible as data relevant to that substance… the lab-THC.
In conclusion, that Cannabis is harmless cannot be 'half-stated'. To recommend legalisation without controls, of any substance which is dangerous would be inappropriate and invite censure. In re cannabis, where not only accepted safety but also benefits from use are confirmed, it is necessary to state unambiguously its safe nature and expose the claims to the contrary, wherever and whenever they appear, for the chicanery and tergiversation that they are. The basis of any statement must refer to and be founded, not on conjecture, but on the Evidence of empirical investigations into people's actual use of the herb.
